Open Garden Squares Day 2018
Penge Green Gym will be again taking part in the Open Garden Squares Weekend on Sunday 10th June 2018 from 1pm to 4pm in Winsford Gardens, SE20 7RN. Open Garden Squares Weekend is organised by the London Parks & Gardens Trust.
Informal guided tours of the gardens with Friends of Winsford Gardens volunteers, explaining history and transformation since 2011. In addition, lawns available for picnics, there is a children’s play area, and pick-your-own organic vegetables.
The Open Garden Squares Weekend is a prestigious event in the gardener’s calendar where gardens all over London open their doors to the public. Hundreds of gardens are involved in the weekend event. Some gardens not usually open to the public are open, including 10 Downing Street and National Trust properties. Other gardens range from historical private squares to contemporary roof gardens, in places as diverse as museums, prisons, barges and shipping containers.
Winsford Gardens is managed by Penge Green Gym, an independent community group of volunteers originally formed in May 2011 by The Conservation Volunteers (formally BTCV). The volunteers have been working to transform Winsford Gardens into a vibrant community and wildlife garden for over seven years now. At this event we will be proud to show off all the hard work we have undertaken. Projects first of all included constructing a growing area with frames and nursery beds and seeding wildflower meadows. In addition, we have planting up the ornamental beds; built compost bins, seating, and a children’s playground. We planted an urban orchard, hedgerows, created a bog garden, a gravel garden….the list goes on!
Finally, it will be a good chance to see for yourself how Winsford Gardens continues to change.
