Penge Green Gym Community Group Launch Day May 2013
Our launch day was held on 1st May 2013. On that day, Penge Green Gym officially became its own, self-governing community group following 2 years of being guided by Lizzy Kaimakamis née Johnson at TCV. The idea for a ‘Green Gym‘ was first thought up by Dr William Bird of the Sonning Common Medical centre. TCV (formerly The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers BTCV) had developed the idea. Now our volunteers officially took over the reins for themselves.
Members of TCV, Bromley Council, Intu Bromley (formally Capital Shopping Centres) and volunteers enjoyed a beautiful day in the sun on our official launch day.
We started the day with our usual warm up and tool talk and then spent an hour on general garden maintenance and the completion of the Interpretation board designed by Lindsay Noble and created by Penge Green Gym volunteers from recycled wood.
You can look more closely at the design here: WinsfordGardensSign
The design had four main aims:-
- Inform visitors about the work and progress in the garden,
and about upcoming events and news. - Invite visitors to join the weekly sessions.
- Encourage respect of the garden, and increase awareness
of the wildlife and features in the garden. - Give Penge Green Gym a sense of ownership of the project,
and celebrate their achievements in the garden so far.
We cut the ribbon on the board to a round of applause and then finished off the day with a picnic including some freshly brewed lovely tea and homemade iced cakes!
What a perfect way to say thank you to our supporters and to celebrate our independence.
We already have made plans for the future development of Winsford Gardens and Penge Green Gym so keep watching this website for further details.
