Winsford Gardens Open Day – Sunday 12 June 2016
Penge Green Gym has now been running for over five years, and Sunday 12 June was the fifth time we have held an Open Day to show off our many achievements and aims. As last year, we decided to hold the event on a Sunday following the Penge Festival Fete. There are too many other events on Saturdays during June. However, this year was a year of firsts; the first time we have not been a part of the Open Garden Squares Weekend. This is usually held on the second weekend in June but it was moved this year so as not to clash with the Queens Ninetieth Birthday celebrations. We felt that being a part of the Penge Festival brought us more local people. This was also the first year in which we had to contend with heavy persistent rain.
Still, attendance was good, once the rain stopped, and it turned out to be our most profitable year yet. Sales at the plant sale were brisk and there was plenty of shelter for those eating cakes from the refreshment stall or for face painted children creating bird feeders and insect hotels.
Unfortunately, the planned Outdoor Yoga with Mary (PurplePalmYoga on Facebook and Twitter) had to be called off due to the rain. We did have live music from Musica Medioca (also known as the Clock House Ensemble) for the second time. More about the ensemble here: Clock House Concert.
Thanks for Ching from Bromley Green Gym for once again doing the face painting and balloon modeling. The Treasure Hunt was a little more difficult this year, so those balloons were harder to win.
The cake stall had all kinds of flapjacks, banana cakes, fairy cakes and rocky roads. Some varieties sold out very quickly.
Our thanks to everyone who came along and made it another successful event. The sun did come out later on. We hope to have another event later this year. Look out for further details on our News page or on Twitter and Facebook.
